GUIDED LONDON WALK: 'THE SECRET VILLAGE'
7pm

The ancient, hidden village of Clerkenwell clings to a hillside barely a stone's throw away from St. Paul's Cathedral. Its very name – the clerks' or students' spring – is redolent of antiquity; and indeed this tiny hamlet serves up brimming draughts from the deep well of its history. Mystery plays and plague pits; riots and rookeries; bodysnatching and bombing; jousting and jesters; bloodshed and burnings; monks, murder, and medicine: Clerkenwell has a tale or two to tell. Tracing its narrow alleyways and ancient squares, we take in here a Norman church; there a magnificent Tudor gateway; round that corner venerable Charterhouse, London's only surviving mediaeval monastic complex; let alone Hercule Poirot's London flat and the trendiest house in town. And that's not to mention a sprinkling of superb old pubs. Pubs that are what pubs should be – traditional, time-honoured, hearts of oak!

N.B. the walk takes about two and a half hours and ends at Farringdon Station.

ROBINS HOOD BAY (AIVC EVENT)

Leisure Holiday / Field Centre Accommodation - A Birmingham IVC Event

We came here in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016 had such a good time, so we have to go back!

Only 1 week this time because Hilary and I want to go somewhere else in Aug 2017.

Robin Hood’s Bay, with its narrow streets and quaint cottages and houses, is one of the most picturesque and far-famed villages on the English coastline. The old village nestles in a narrow ravine at the edge of a wide sweeping bay, which is bounded on the north by Bay Ness and on the south by the lofty cliffs of Ravenscar.

For more details about Robin Hood’s Bay go to www.robin-hoods-bay.co.uk or www.bayfair.co.uk and follow the links.

We are taking over the “Old School House” which has really good accommodation similar to a Youth Hotel. www.old-school-house.co.uk

Things to do!

Walking - Robin Hoods Bay is at the end of the famous Wainwrights Coast to Coast walk.

Cycling - The Whitby to Scarborough cycle route follows the old railway passing through RHB. Cycle hire is available nearby. go to: www.trailways.info

Whitby - is dominated by the cliff-top ruins of the beautiful 13th century Whitby Abbey. This traditional maritime town, with its old cobbled streets,

Scarborough - Britain’s first seaside resort, has been welcoming visitors for over 360 years and is still as popular as ever.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway - magnificent steam engines, beautiful rural stations and smartly uniformed staff, is like taking a step back in time.

Plus loads more close by.

LONDON DUCK TOUR!
12 noon
At the very heart of the London Duck Tours experience is our Classic Sightseeing Tour – the original tour that started it all off! Let the original London Duck tour take you around the beating heart of London – where royalty mixes with parliament and pageantry! We cover the whole kit and caboodle in this Classic Sightseeing Tour, so take a pew, sit back and enjoy – let us do the legwork! We start with the city’s sparklingly spherical millennium landmark, the Coca-Cola London Eye, sitting proudly beside the busy and arty South Bank arts complex. Here you’ll find theatres, concert halls, galleries and eateries. Then we’ll lead you past, in our view, the best vista in the world, the awesome and ancient Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Hall and Westminster Abbey. Round the corner and we’re at the London home the Prime Minister, number 10 Downing Street, modest from the outside, but containing a wealth of history and secrets. You will admire the dashing Household Cavalry on their horses at Horse Guards, then onto the bustling expanse of Trafalgar Square, a tribute to Britain’s greatest sailor, Lord Admiral Nelson, lined with some of the world’s best galleries – the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery – anyone for a selfie? Then sit back and let our chauffeur do the work as you peruse the refined roads of St James’s, with its gentleman’s clubs, historic shops where even Royalty buy their groceries, and the hotel to top them all, the hotel designed like a little piece of Versailles in London, The Ritz! Don’t forget the ancient Royal Palace that this area was named after, handily across the road from the oldest wine merchant in England, Berry Brothers and Rudd. But still there’s more…how about the “head office” of our Royal family, Buckingham Palace itself, and then there’s the artistic hub that is Tate Britain too, not forgetting the mysterious and infamous MI5 & MI6 before the dramatic splashdown onto the Thames! You’d be just quackers to miss it!
